SUPPORT FOR ADULTS RECOVERING FROM TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES

Do you feel stuck in the pain of past events?

Maybe you find yourself having intense emotions and reactions to present-day situations that feel out of the norm, or perhaps you feel out of control of your emotions. You may be feeling highly activated and irritated all the time, or simply disconnected from all of life. Perhaps you’re feeling like the pain of that past event will never go away or be healed.

Maybe you’re noticing:

  • Difficulty focusing at work

  • Challenges in feeling connected and safe in relationships

  • Overwhelmed by your emotions

  • Unmotivated in ways that aren’t like you

  • Physical distress and body aches or tension

EMDR therapy for trauma can help.

HOW EMDR THERAPY WORKS

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. It is a well-researched approach to treating trauma, and particularly symptoms of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which individuals can develop after witnessing, learning of, or experiencing a traumatic event).

This therapy approach uses bilateral stimulation (eyes moving back and forth, or “buzzies” buzzing side to side in each hand) to activate systems in our brain and body that help process memories.

In the safety of the therapeutic dynamic, EMDR can help you to

  • Identify past events that inhibit you in the present

  • Understand the impact of those events on your perception of yourself and the world

  • Reduce the discomfort you feel when you think about the past event

  • Shift the meaning of the past event to something more helpful in the present

  • Relieve physical distress associated with past painful memories

I’ll help through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstance. My approach to trauma therapy comes from a place of hopeful confidence: believing you have the capacity to heal and reclaim peace in your life.

Trauma Therapy can help you find relief.

It may feel impossible now, but you can be freed from the pain of the past. You can feel at ease again. You can live a life with joy. And I can help you get there.

Based on your unique story and needs, we may decide to use EMDR or another trauma-informed approach. My commitment to your safety means that I will respect your sense of readiness and autonomy throughout our work together.

You don’t have to keep feeling stuck in the past and alone in life.

I’M HERE TO HELP YOU RECLAIM THE PRESENT

FAQS

Common questions about trauma therapy for adults

  • In our 50-minute sessions together, we’ll work to identify the past painful event(s). We’ll then find the approach that is best suited to relieve the distress that event caused. Often, this involves a trauma-informed approach called EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) which activates memory processing in the brain through stimulating both sides of the body through eye movements or “buzzies” you hold in each hand.

Other times, I may guide you through a meditation to connect with your “inner child” that may have experienced wounding. All along the way, I check in to see what’s working for you and tailor my approach to your needs and pace.

  • Great question. I wish there was a simple answer! Client progress varies depending on life circumstances and the kinds of traumas experienced.

Some clients find that committing to going to therapy biweekly for 6 months is a good start. From there, we can determine if more work together is suitable, or if we’ve arrived at a good stopping point. We can create a treatment plan tailored to your needs and reassess your needs as we go.

  • While I can’t make any guarantees, clients often say they feel relief from past painful events after only a few sessions focused on treating a single-event trauma.

For clients who experienced multiple traumas over time, healing may take more time and involve integrating additional approaches.

We’ll work together to determine the best fit for you and your needs.

  • The session fee is $250. We will meet weekly for the first month and then decide if we want to continue to meet weekly or biweekly.

Payment can be made via cash, check, or card (including HSA). While I do not accept insurance, I can provide a superbill (receipt) which you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement if you’d like.

  • Our first step is to have a brief 15-minute consult call. On this call you can share with me a bit about your current situation or pain. I’ll answer any questions you have about therapy and our potential work together. Then if it feels like a good fit, we’ll schedule our first 50-minute intake session.
